Abstract

Depression is one of the psychopathologies with the greatest impact on global public health, which has generated growing interest in identifying complementary lifestyle-based interventions, particularly those related to diet. The aim of this study was to review the available scientific evidence on the effects of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention and treatment of depressive symptoms in adult populations. A search was conducted for articles in Spanish and English published between 2015 and 2025 in Web of Science and Scopus. Seven randomized controlled trials were included, all of which implemented interventions based on the Mediterranean diet and assessed depression using validated scales. The reviewed studies indicate that, in most cases, the Mediterranean diet produced a significant reduction in depressive symptoms compared to control conditions, especially when nutritional education, professional support, or supplementation were incorporated. The characteristics of the interventions, adherence, the psychometric tools used, and methodological limitations are discussed. It is suggested that future research employ longitudinal designs with larger and culturally diverse samples, incorporate biomarkers, and deepen the understanding of the mechanisms through which the Mediterranean diet contributes to mental health.
