Digital Phenomenology of Narratives on Parental Authority and Custody in Ecuador on X/Twitter

Abstract

This study analyzed public narratives about parental authority and custody in Ecuador through X/Twitter posts (2023-2025). A qualitative design with digital phenomenology and thematic analysis was employed, using automated extraction in Python. The corpus of 60 tweets was refined, contextualized, and iteratively coded. Results show a fragmented, nonhomogeneous conversation activated by legal and media events, with peaks in 2023 and 2025. Few posts concentrated visibility; most had limited circulation. Five narrative axes emerged: custody and residence; legalprocedural framework; parent-child bond and equality disputes; co-parenting and child welfare; and legal decisions. X/Twitter functions as a space where meanings about post-separation care, parental power, and judicial legitimacy are simplified, dramatized, and contested. The study concludes that these digital narratives enable understanding of contemporary social and legal tensions, considering corpus fragmentation, unequal visibility, and the situated nature of online conversation.
